News from the Red Tees | June 2021
Welcome to the June edition of the Red Tees. After having another week during May interrupted by some huge storms closing the course for a couple of days, we are now hoping Mother Nature is kind and look forward to what is a very busy golfing schedule ahead.
Other than a full golfing calendar, there are plenty of social activities planned.

Ladies President’s Note
What a magnificent time of year it is at the moment with glorious golfing weather, pennants back in our calendar, championships just around the corner… who will have their photographs added to the champions wall in the locker room?
Congratulations to all of our pennant teams who continue to make us proud. Our pennant teams are yet another great example of the camaraderie shown in our wonderful golf club, with all players, caddies and captains working together week after week to do their best for their teammates.
Sadly, just as we all are feeling “normal”, with bunkers and rakes back in play, pennants back on the calendar, the return of weekly announcements and presentations, we are again reminded of how fragile this “normality” is with the return of Covid lock downs in Victoria this week. This is a timely reminder to us all that this virus is still with us, and we have to continue to be vigilant with our Covid safety practices.
Enjoy our beautiful weather and freedoms for now, and good golfing to all.
Sue Lewandowski,
Ladies President

New Irrigation System
As the time of writing this irrigation update, Hole 3 had just been completed and works had begun on Hole 2. Four holes including 4, 5, 6 and 3 have now been completed. Unfortunately, due to wet weather which included a major storm in early May the project is approximately 5 weeks behind schedule. At this stage, after Hole 2 is completed, the contractors will install the irrigation on Hole 7, 8 and 17. All Members are reminded that when a hole is being worked on, we need to stay well away from the hole as It is a work site in its entirety. I take this opportunity to thank Members for their patience during the project to date.
Weekly updates on our irrigation are published and distributed via the Golf Shop. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
Thursday Time Sheets
As has been communicated everyone should now be aware that the Committee has agreed to trial a “Two Tee Start” for Thursday golf. This will give members greater flexibility to choose either competition or social golf in the morning fields.
The 1st tee is now open from 6.30am until 8.22am for compulsory competition play. The 10th tee will open at 7.00am until 8.22am for social play with optional competition

Captain’s Corner
[ct_spacer height=”25″]
We are now in the peak of our golfing season. The reports from all Pennant teams included in this Red Tees are all positive for the Brisbane Golf Club. Both Midweek and Weekend teams in all divisions are doing us proud. On the 11thJune BGC will be hosting both the Silver and Bronze Pennant Teams from all clubs in those divisions. There will be 70 pennant players and their caddies on the course and as hosts we need to provide some support. We will be starting the fields, marshalling the players and spotting in certain areas. If you are able to help volunteering on the day please contact me either in person or by email. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
At the Club level we have begun the opening qualify rounds for this year’s Club Championships. This season we will play two rounds of stroke and followed with match play for the top 8 of each division. It is also wonderful to see a Junior Girls Championship being competed for. Many thanks to Joe and Asha for all their hard work developing the Juniors and now organising an event for them to be recognised.
Besides from the Club Championships, the other major event coming up is our 36 Hole Club Foursomes. On the 1st June three Nomination sheets will open for the 36 Hole Club Foursomes to be played on Tuesday June 29th. The foursomes Champions will be decided on gross scores and there will be a 36 hole nett event as well.
In the coming weeks I will be setting up a nomination sheet for the RQ Challenge to be played on the 26th July at RQ. This will be done on a first come first serve basis. It is a great opportunity to meet and have a game with our RQ counterparts at Royal Queensland Golf Club. When full details are available I will pass it on.
During this period of course works and installation of irrigation system, there will be a lot of course changes and re-routing. It is important for your safety and the safety of others on the course that you follow the directions for transition between holes particularly when crossing in a direction we don’t normally travel there is danger with blind shots on certain holes. Please keep an eye out for any such directions from myself or Club Captain Alan Grieve.
Good golfing to all in the upcoming events.

PENNANTS
[ct_spacer height=”25″]
The 2021 BDLGA Pennant Season commenced on Friday 14 May with three teams playing in the midweek competition and two teams playing in the weekend competition.
The weekend teams had their home game on the first round with both Weekend 1 and Weekend 2 playing. As our Club Vice President, Debbie Kember said in her welcome, “With 70 players, their caddies, officials and BGC volunteers the Club looked similar to Suncorp Stadium on the magic round of the NRL, but we can do it in one morning whereas the league took all weekend!”.
Both Silver and Bronze have a bye on the 11th of June at Brisbane and Gold isn’t playing at home this year.
You will see from the results after the first 3 weeks of matches that each team is well within contention.
Good golfing to all our 5 teams for the remaining matches.

BOOK REVIEW
[ct_spacer height=”25″]
We love to read…
Book Review by member, Kathryn Meredith
The Paris Library
Jane Skeslien Charles
In 2010 the author worked in the American Library in Paris as the program manager and was told of the brave people who continued to keep the library open during the Nazi occupation, even hand delivering books to their Jewish subscribers who were forced into hiding. The library is still operating today in Paris at 10, rue du General Camou and inside each book bears the original motto: ‘After the darkness of war, the light of books’.
The novel is told by two main characters from different decades – Lily, a lonely teenager living in Montana, USA in 1983 and her elegant Parisian elderly neighbour, Odile. As their friendship develops Lily uncovers her neighbour’s mysterious past while they discover their love of books and language. It’s not until the end of the story you learn why Odile fled Paris for Montana.
This novel is based on the true Second World War story of the Library and is filled with friendships, romance and heroism – enjoy!

MEMBERS INTERVIEW MEMBERS
Robyn Cumming and Jan Hamilton in conversation…
Robyn: How long have you been a member of the Brisbane Golf Club?
Jan: I have been a member for 25 years.
Robyn: When did you learn to play golf?
Jan: I learnt to play golf at the St Lucia Golf Club. Marion Mationschek and I decided we wanted to play golf, so we learnt there together. We had a few games and I played reasonably well, so I thought this game was going to be easy. Little did I realise that golf masters you, not the other way around.
Robyn: We know you are the Queen of dress-ups. Which one did you enjoy most?
Jan: My first dress up was a G Day. I went along as a gorilla. Nobody knew who I was as I played golf in the costume. It was a hot day and I kept slipping over in the rubber feet. After golf Karlie Costello saw me and gave a blood curdling scream as she fell into a chair. She’d just had a hip replacement but luckily there was no damage done. She didn’t talk to me for a while after that.
Robyn: Have you had other memorable days at the Golf Club?
Jan: Yes, the cruise dress up day. Jenny Johnson suggested I go as the ship’s tart and I happily did so. Long blond hair, tight skirt, fish net stockings, big fake boobs and twirling a red G string. Little did I know our Ladies President, Amanda Harburg had invited the Anglican priest along to call bingo. Amanda explained that I was really “ok”, but I think he is still praying for me. I recall Robyn Elphinstone saying, why is it that I am my happiest when I look my worst!
Jan: When did you learn to play golf?
Robyn: My dad taught me to play when I was a teenager. He was a very good golfer, playing off 2 for a while. What a shame his brilliance did not rub off on me! I started playing my golf at Mt Perry where there were sand greens and it really depended on your prowess at raking the greens as to whether you putted well or not.
Jan: How long have you been a member of the Brisbane Golf Club?
Robyn: I joined in 1997. I have played fairly regularly since then, except for two years when my husband Jim was unwell. We would come and play a couple of holes when he felt up to it.
Jan: What has been a memorable time at the Golf Club?
Robyn: The day I had a hole in one on the 4th. What excitement. I was playing with two good friends but neither of them watched my shot. Jenny Johnson, who was teeing off on the 17th heard the commotion when we arrived at the green and brought me a red jellybean to celebrate.
Jan: What do value most about your time at the Brisbane Golf Club?
Robyn: Apart from the golf, I have made some wonderful friends. I enjoy the fellowship after golf on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. I also enjoy the extracurricular activities – being part of the gardening group, sewing group and doing my ikebana regularly in the ladies locker room. The BGC is very much a part of my life.
Long time pals, Jan & Robyn

RULES & TIPS
[ct_spacer height=”25″]
Rule
With bunkers now back in play and there no longer being relief, it is probably a good time to revisit the rules regarding play in a bunker.
Under 12.2 of the Rules of Golf you may now remove loose impediments and movable obstructions before playing your ball in a bunker.
Restrictions on touching the sand in a bunker is explained under Rule 12.2b where it states:
Before making a stroke at your ball in a bunker, you must not:
- Deliberately touch sand in the bunker with your hand, a club or rake or any other object to test the condition of the sand and learn information for your next stroke, or
- Touch sand in the bunker with your club:
- In the area right in front of or right behind you ball (except as allowed in fairly searching for your ball or in removing a loose impediment or movable obstruction),
- In making a practice swing, or
- In making your backswing for a stroke.
Tip by BGC Professional, Asha Hargreaves
Cure Your Bunker Woes
How many times have you had a shot from a bunker and wondered if you could hit a good shot? More times than not we get scared of the thought of hitting out of the sand, especially with a very high lip in front of us. Having a good understanding of how a bunker shot is played will help you to master the sand in no time.
How Does a Greenside Bunker Shot Work?
A greenside bunker shot is the only shot in golf where you want to hit the sand before the ball. Players open the club face to provide more loft and height, hitting into the sand an inch behind the ball with a full swing. The idea of the full swing is to counteract the energy that is required to get the ball out of the sand.
Three Causes That Lead to Bad Shots
1 – Set Up
Having an incorrect set up will definitely hinder your chances at playing world class bunkers shots. Try this next time in your set up
- Feet wide a part and squat down
- Ball position on the left heel, feet flared out
- Pressure 70% on the left side
- Let the clubface open first with the grooves of your club pointing to the left toe
2 – Body Weight
Your body weight moves too far back and too far forward resulting in inconsistent sand contact.
Fix: Maintain all of your pressure into the left side of your body like a door hinge. A good tip is to keep your nose on the ball. Make swings focusing on keeping your lower body still with slow controlled movements.
3 – Deaccelerate Before Impact
Golfers deaccelerate over fear of hitting the ball too far because of poor set up. Because of this, they take a beautiful backswing and then stop swinging as they get to the ball, resulting in staying in the bunker. Fix this by making sure you get all the way through your finish position with your belly button pointed to the target. Do some practice swings in the sand; if sand doesn’t get out of the bunker, neither will your ball.

Bridge
Report by member, Liz McReynolds
Ladies,
We are learning to play better, mostly!
We now have a small group of ladies who come along to our weekly bridge game on a Thursday after golf. There is no set start time, we just get going around 12.30pm when players are ready and usually, we play until 2.30 pm. Anyone who is interested in a game is most welcome to join us. There is no obligation to play every week and we have a mixed standard of players. We often discuss our hands and bidding so that we are getting the most out of the hands we play. Some ladies are new to the game, so if you wish to learn and give bridge a try please come along. If we don’t have fours we swap in and out and we all get a game. So, come along, we do not take it super seriously as they do in Bridge Clubs.
A bridge quote: “We had a partnership misunderstanding. My partner assumed I knew what I was doing”.
If you would like to join the next session, please contact Liz McReynolds liz.mcreynolds57@gmail.com or phone 0409 995 728.
