The Shootout is Back

The start of 2022 has been an interesting/challenging one as far as golf goes with rain affecting a number of events, as well as the course. However, there is some good news…the Shootout is back, and it’s bigger than ever!

What is the Shootout? I’m glad you asked. It is a day of skill, luck, patience, and strategy. At the beginning of the day we start with 19 players, you heard correct, 19 all teeing off the first…that’s where patience comes in. At the end of each hole, the two players who have the highest scores are eliminated…much to the mirth of those who are watching. If there are more than two players with the same high score, there will be a chip off to determine who leaves the competition. The Shootout is played over 9 holes (holes 1-9) and played on handicap. The last hole is a 3 person playoff which calls for nerves of steel. The winner is the last person standing.

This year’s Shootout is shaping up to have a much bigger prize pool than 2021, and by extension more cash for the winner…when I say cash, I mean money into your house account. We are lucky enough to be blessed with very generous Members and this year’s Shootout will be sponsored by Peter Walker of NVP Constructions and will be called the NVP/BGC Shootout. Peter has kindly offered to add $500 to the prize pool. But wait, there’s more! On top of this, the club has generously offered to match that amount, meaning the prize pool is already at $1,000 before a ball has been struck in anger!

For every player we have trying to qualify, it will be an extra $25 in the prize pool, so the more players, the bigger the prize pool. As an example, last year Kristian Poole won in a chip off…and pocketed a lovely $400. If we had 50 members try and qualify, that would add an extra $1,250 on top of the already guaranteed $1,000. Oh, and did I mention that even if you go out on the first hole, you are guaranteed to win something…apart from the ignominy of losing first up. Amateurs can now win up to $1,350 before being considered professional, how good would that be?

So how do you get the chance to play for serious money?

  • First of all you need to enter prior to your first round by emailing Reece McRae via reece@brisbanegolfclub.com.au. All entries must be in writing. He will then arrange for the $25 entry fee to be deducted from your house account.
  • The below dates are qualifying rounds and you can play in as many as you are able to a maximum of 8 rounds.
  • Your best 3 rounds will be aggregated to be your qualifying points. i.e if you play 3 rounds and have 38, 32, 34 your aggregate will be 104.
  • You will have until the end of June to pay your entrance fee.
  • The final will be held on Sunday, 4 December 2022.

To make up the 19 players we will have: 4 x A Grade, 4 x B Grade, 4 x C Grade, 4 x Ladies, and the next 3 best players from all grades.

If this is something that would interest you, please register by emailing Reece McRae via reece@brisbanegolfclub.com.au. He will then organise payment and your name will be on the list.

If you have any questions please reach out to Joe Janison, Reece McRae or myself. Good luck for those who are brave enough to give it a go.

Kind regards

Ash Sturmer, Men’s Captain
