Round 3 Pennant Wrap – Sunday, 31 July

We are at the halfway point of season and yesterday saw Brisbane Golf Club play its first away game against Pacific Golf Club. This was a match that was going to be a tough assignment, as any away game is, but Pacific were an unknown factor as we have not played them in a number of years. Having said that, the team were tasked with grabbing as many points as they could, and as it turned out, they grabbed 11…AN AWAY WIN! What a fantastic achievement which sets up the back half of the season and continues momentum.

The team really showed a sense of occasion and represented BGC brilliantly with their comradery, sense of fair play, support of each other, but more importantly they showed what can be done under trying circumstances . We have a way to go yet, but already the pride this team has for Brisbane Golf Club is evident…and we are proud of the team.

When we say team, we are talking not only of players, but caddies, managers, supporters, and parents. Without you the players would not be able to function as the unit they have become. So, thank you very much for the continued support.

Opens 6/5:

We welcomed back the two Sams and Connor this week, but the team still had a tough assignment against a team who, the week prior, halved with Keperra at Keperra. To win 6 games to 5 is an outstanding achievement which included debutant Will Hughes who was called in Saturday night to cover…and cover he did winning 2&1. Connor Whitelock was outstanding with a 5&4 win. John Smoljko was his usual consistent self with a beautiful 6&4 win. Ilija Soldan, whilst not having his usual speed cart, was still in a hurry and demolished his opponent 8&7…did you have somewhere to be in afternoon? Cooper Clarke played a recent A Plate winner and showed how golf should be played winning 3&1. Ben Steiler turned his game around to put in a commanding effort to win 2&1.

Juniors 4/1:

What can we say about these guys who continue to shine and show real team spirit. Not only do they know each other from playing various tournaments, but you can often see them practicing together into the evenings pushing each other…thank you Parents for efforts. Another solid bank of points with Chase Oberle deciding that being behind was getting old so jumped out of the blocks to a big 5&4 win. Harvey Palmer was down early but showed that it isn’t over until the last to win 2 up. Harvey also gave our team a lesson in what spirit of fair play means when an incident occurred where he was well within his rights to claim the hole but allowed the mistake to be redressed. Hold your head high Harvey, that was an outstanding piece of sportsmanship! We welcomed Campbell Kerr back from his successful trip overseas to show no signs of jet lag with a great 2&1 win…despite the white hat 😊. Demos Drakos, back at his old stomping ground, also turned his game around and having a veteran in Tom Deane on the bag, won 2up.

Masters 1/4:

Not the score line they were after, but all games were hard fought to the end. We welcomed Phil Melksham back for his first game this season. Stephen Deane thought winning away wasn’t difficult enough when he found his driver broken and had to use 3 wood for the majority of the match. To only lose 1 down with that is something that should highlight the fighting spirit within the team. The one win came from Ash Sturmer, who for the second week running was 3 down, only to score an important point for the team…maybe should take a leaf out of Chase’s book from here.

Next week we host Pacific who will be smarting by the home loss and no doubt come out all guns blazing. We will be ready to take that challenge on and show them what it takes to win at home. Thank you again to all involved, the support is very much appreciated by the whole team.
