Round 4 Pennant Wrap – Sunday, 7 August

Sunday saw Pacific Golf Club arrive at The Brisbane Golf Club with a point to prove after being defeated at home the week prior by us. For BGC, a win meant we stayed undefeated, so the team was tasked to not only win, but gain as many valuable points as possible on the day. The team delivered in tremendous fashion and showed what it takes to win decisively (15.5/5.5) at home.

The excitement throughout the club is showing with more and more supporters coming out to watch some elite golf being played. Thank you to all that made the effort, the players appreciate and love it. Also thanks to the parents, caddies, and staff who support week in week out…it is a key reason we are doing well as a team.

Opens 8/3:

When you have to leave out class players like Tom Deane, Dylan Barraclough, Luke Kjeldal, and Will Hughes, it shows the depth and strength we have in this team. It showed in the above score line with a commanding win and a nice bounty of points. Sam Slater was welcomed back to the winner’s list by exacting revenge on last week’s opponent 3&2. Conor Whitelock wanted to play all 18 holes but still came away with a point and 1up win. Chris Somerfield in his last game for BGC this year had a resounding 6&5 win. We would like to wish Chris all the best as he jets off to US College this Thursday. John Smoljko carried on his great form with yet another win 5&4. Ilija Soldan was made to work for his win this week and managed to fall over the line with a 4&3 win. Ben Stieler has peaked at the right time with his game and enjoyed a comfortable 6&4 win. Paul Todd came back into the side after a week off and made short work of his opponent 7&5. Craig Mahon, back at home, was untouchable again with a 4&3 win.

Juniors 3.5/1.5:

This group of young men just keep on keeping on with another big haul of points against some talented players. Justin McCormack came back from last week’s disappointment with a fighting half. Chase Oberle again decided that he didn’t want play catch up and won well 3&2. Chase was also named Ron Chopper Player of the Day as he is yet to taste defeat and plays the game with great spirit and fairness. Harvey Palmer wanted to join in the fun by winning comfortably 3&2. Campbell Kerr played like he had somewhere to be that afternoon by winning 4&3.

Masters 4/1:

The Broken Old Blokes had a point to prove after getting towelled at Pacific last week and made amends by reversing that score line at home. Eugene was welcomed back, after his week of punting in Darwin, to win convincingly 5&3. Stephen Deane welcomed a new driver, and with the aid of Tom on his bag, continued the fairway/green style of play he is known for to grab a solid 2up win. Ash Sturmer wasn’t down by 3 this week and couldn’t quite snag the win but managed a half point so no loss. Phil Lynem decided to do an Ash impersonation and give his opponent a 3 hole lead but managed to also grab a half point. Ian Burgess played a great game to win his match comfortably 4&2.

With two rounds remaining it is still anyone’s Pennant to win, maybe not Pacific. Whilst we are excited to be in this position, we are not home by any stretch of the imagination and still need to perform to our best and gather as many points as we can each week…and if we manage 11 points in any of the last two weeks that is a bonus. The team are not worrying about things we cannot control, like Redcliffe or Keperra winning at Pacific, as that is wasting precious energy. Instead we are focussed on the job at hand by preparing well, turning up ready to play, and giving it our best shot. We are on the road to Redcliffe this Sunday and will be doing our best and representing BGC in the best possible way.
