Clean sweep by BGC Pennant ladies

The Brisbane Golf Club’s Women’s Pennant teams have completed a clean sweep of the Brisbane and Districts Ladies Golf Association 2023 competition, winning all three divisions in which the club was entered.

And incredibly, of the 19 matches played by BGCs three teams, defeat was tasted only once.

“This has been an amazing result for our club, and one which all members – male and female – should be extremely chuffed, and proud,” said BGC Women’s Captain, Janet Nathanson.

“Back in 2021 we also won three divisions, but had five teams entered. For all teams to win this year is certainly a remarkable effort.”

In the two premier divisions – Yellow Diamond (played on Fridays) and Silver (Sundays) – BGC was undefeated. Diamond scored five wins and two ties across the seven matches to finish on top of the ladder with 12 points, while Silver won all six of its matches to also finish on 12 points.

The first three matches in each contest in Yellow Diamond were played off the stick, with the remainder off full handicap difference – the maximum handicap allowable being 20. BGCs biggest win of the season was against Pacific Golf Club at McLeod – a 7-nil walkover.

Fiona Eldson won each of the seven matches she played, while Hannah Reeves was also undefeated. However, Hannah played only six matches, missing the final round to play in the Taiwan Amateur Championship, in which she finished a very creditable fourth.

Eight clubs competed in Yellow Diamond, and nine players represented BGC across the seven matches – unbeaten Hannah and Fiona, as well as Lynne Conroy, Susan McDougall, Carolyn Martin, Perri IIott, Ann Fell, Angela Fong and Aspen Sugars. Indooroopilly finished second, three points in arrears on nine.

Seven teams competed in the Silver Division, which was played on Sundays. And BGC won all six games, finishing on 12 points, five points ahead of second-paced Nudgee.

Again, in this division, the first three matches were played off the stick, with the remainder contested on full handicap difference – the maximum was again 20.

Seven players in Silver Division were undefeated throughout the competition – Safina Kyprianou and Angelina Drakos winning four from four, Aspen Sugars three from three, Ky-An-Vu (two from two) and Tammy Cole, Jodi Holmes and Susan McDougall winning at their lone Pennant appearance.

Sixteen women represented BGC in Silver Division, with Lisa Edgar, Susan Lewandowski, Julie Whan, Ashleigh Hay, Yvonne Butcher, Jen Berkman, Kate Morgan, Hannah Reeves and Renae Michielson joining the unbeaten magnificent seven.

In Sapphire Zone Two – which was also played on a Friday – seven teams competed and BGC won five of the six matches. The only loss was at Sandgate Golf Club, at the hands of Nudgee, which finished second on the ladder.

This was the closest competition of the three, with BGC prevailing over Nudgee, 10 -9, in which all matches were played off full handicap (maximum handicap 32). In one game, BGC gave 56 shots to their opponents – an average of eight shots per player – and still won.

The 13 women who represented BGC in Sapphire where Sue Eagleton, Sue Lewandowski, Margot McNee, Angela Cottrell, Anna Lyons, Jan Dixon, Leigh Francis, Helen Caris, Allison Cook, Julie Brown, Amber Raman, Kerrie O’Callaghan and Berenice Holmes.

“Overall, the girls played excellent golf and the team spirt in all three divisions was amazing,” Janet enthused.

“This result has genuinely been quite an outstanding and memorable achievement by our ladies.” – TONY DURKIN
