Senior Team’s Challenge – Match Report v Carbrook

The rain stayed away and so it was perfect golf weather at Carbrook today. The STC team did a fantastic job winning 4.5/1.5 against Carbrook at their home track. This puts us in a great position to challenge Gailes for the top spot!

Here are the individual match reports:

  • Darryl Stuckey, who only a matter of a few weeks ago was making up the numbers in the 4bbb pairings, was our marquee player today. Darryl played very solidly and after a very close first nine got to the 16th tee dormy three up.  His opponent scored a very good birdie four on the 16th but then Darryl played a rock-solid 17th hole for a par to win 2/1.  There is a rumour that Deano’s place at number one in the team might be in jeopardy
  • Craig James had one of those days to forget and lost 5/4.  His opponent did play a really good round to be only one over par when the match finished
  • In what turned out to be the match of the day, Geoff Moore sank a birdie put from 12 feet on the last to square the match – a very important result at that point because it guaranteed us a team win on the day. After walking off the 7th green earlier in the round, Geoff was one up.  He confessed to me at the time that he wasn’t playing good golf.  I can partly attest to this by watching the 5th hole which was halved in double bogeys!  I then caught up with Geoff on the 13th fairway and he told me he was playing much better golf.  I then asked what the score was to which he told me he was two down (how does that work I thought?).  From there Geoff played some solid golf including a tap-in birdie on the 16th to square the match. He then played a poor 17th hole to go dormy one down.  The rest is history!
  • Geoff Holding’s match was the perfect foil for Mr Moore’s match.  After seven holes Geoff H was one down but he then reeled off five winning holes in a row to take a commanding lead which he held on to for a 3/2 win
  • In the first of the 4bbb matches, Richard Peacock had to give our opponents four and five shots (with Patrick Dixon getting one shot himself). Patrick’s play, like last week, proved the difference between the two teams.  He hit it like a dart with his low penetrating drives as well as some excellent iron shots. I must also mention that Richard got the ball rolling in the match with an excellent birdie on the 1st hole. The boys’ 4/3 win was out biggest of the day; and
  • The final 4bbb match was a doozy. Bruce ‘the mouth’ Weston birdied the first hole but, not to be outdone, Marto birdied the 2nd with a chip in from well off the green. The other opponent was very unlucky to have his birdie putt, also from well off the green, not go in. At one stage early on the back nine our boys were three down.  But Marto then sunk two more shots from off the green over the next few holes and Craig Mills played some very steady golf in support. We went up the last hole with a one-shot lead and both Marto and Craig monstered their drives to have wedges left to the green. The Carbrook boys were not able to hit the green in two whereas both of ours were on the green inside 15 feet and we only needed to halve the hole.  This situation finally put a damper on Bruce’s verbal barrage and lead to a two-up win for Marto and Craig.

A really solid day’s golf from the BGC boys, especially given that five of our lowest six markers didn’t play today. To win the singles matches 2.5/1.5 away from home was a very impressive effort.

Would you believe, Aaron Goggin has finally updated the results table!  Here’s the link again:
