Another strong home win for BGC
The Brisbane Golf Club recorded their second home win of the 2023 BDGA Pennant season yesterday defeating Keperra Country Golf Club 16-5. The win keeps the Club’s defence of their division 1 title alive with an exciting finish to the 2023 BDGA Pennant season again expected.
BGC quest to win a fourth title in the past five seasons will depend on the club’s ability to win its remaining two matches, against Redcliffe away and RQ at home. Additionally, BGC needs Keperra to beat RQ at home in Round 5. RQ currently sit on top of the table on eight points with four wins with BGC second on 5 points with two wins, a draw and a loss.
The performance of the Opens in Round 4 was outstanding with the team, winning nine of the eleven matches. Every win produced a highlight including number one, Lachlan Jones winning four holes in a row after being 3 down to win 2/1; Chris Somerfield, playing his last match before heading back to College in America winning 8/7 (he was 7 up after 8 holes); Kai Komulainen recording his first win for BGC 5/4; John Smoljko defeating Keperra’s number one player in Round 1, Wes Hinton 4/2; Conor Whitelock returning for his first match in 2023 to win 5/4 and Craig Mahon continuing his undefeated season with a 5/4 win. Other winners including Ilija Soldan (4/3), Ben Steiler (1up) and John Houston (3/1).
It was wonderful to see Conor Whitelock back representing BGC yesterday after two recent surgeries. He was simply inspirational during that dfficult time and certainly lifted the team yesterday. We can’t wait to see him out again in Round 5 and Round 6.
While the Opens were fantastic at home, the performance of the juniors was equally impressive. The team of Taj Egea, Chase Oberle, Campbell Kerr, Justin McCormack and Harvey Palmer won every match to win 5-0. This is a wonderful result for the boys after a difficult week against RQ in Round 3.
The Keperra Master’s team are at the top of the table for a reason and again were too strong for our Masters winning 3-2. Congratulations to Eugene Estella who won 4/3 and Ian Burgess who win 3/1.
As mentioned, in Round 5, BGC will play Redcliffe Golf Club away with a season defining two points up for grabs. Redcliffe lost 17-4 to RQ in Round 4 and sit on just 3 points. While they can only finish second at best, a win against BGC would end our title chances and save them from relegation back to division 2. As always there will have plenty to play for.
Members are again encouraged to provide their support for our team. The matches will tee off from 7am at Redcliffe Golf Club with the Opens on Hole 1 and the Masters followed by the Juniors on Hole 10.
