BGC and RQ decider this Sunday to determine Division 1 champs
An away draw for The Brisbane Golf Club at Redcliffe Golf Club and a strong home win by Keperra County Golf Club against Royal Queensland Golf Club has set up an exciting finish to the 2023 BDGA pennant season.
A win for BGC against RQ at home in Round 6 will deliver the Club their fourth Division 1 title in the past five seasons while the winner of the Redcliffe and Keperra much will avoid relegation to Division 2 in 2024. Both BGC and RQ are safe from relegation.
BGC travelled to the peninsula knowing Redcliffe would be a match stronger opponent at home and they would be looking to restore some pride after losing to BGC 18-3 in Round 2. The match was close all morning with live scoring keeping both teams within 1 point of each other throughout. In the end a 10.5 draw was a fitting result.
Our Opens secured an important 6-5 win against Redcliffe. The win not only set up the day’s result for BGC but also sets up a decider with RQ this Sunday for the individual Open pennant. A win is required by BGC against RQ. Winners against Redcliffe were Billy Dowling, back from winning the Mobile South Pacific Junior Open last week, who defeated Tyler Duncan in the number one position, 5/4; Lachlan Jones 2up; Ilija Soldan 4/3; John Houston 2/1; Mitchell Vesper 1up and Cooper Clarke 1up. The trio of Lachlan, Mitchell and Cooper turning squared matches into critical wins.
The Juniors will also have a chance to win the individual Junior pennant this week at home after securing a 3.5 to 1.5 win against Redcliffe. With a superior for and against a win or a draw would secure this honour for our Juniors. Kai Komulainen, played in the juniors to cover for the injured Taj Egea and produced a 2/1 win playing at number one. Chase Oberle fought hard all day against to win 1up while Campbell Kerr continued his dominant season with a 6/5 win. Harvey Palmer squared his match.
Redcliffe, knowing a win would keep them from relegation, enticed two of their Masters to re-join their team in Round 5 and their addition made it difficult for BGC on the day. Fortunately, Stephen Deane and Ian Burgess secured 1 point between them which ended up critical to the team’s overall final result.
Members are again encouraged to provide their support for our team in the crucial final round of the 2023 season. The matches against RQ will tee off from 7am at BGC with the Opens on Hole 1 and the Masters followed by the Juniors on Hole 10.
