Volunteer Update

The dreaded Crows Foot weeds, which the volunteers attacked last week, needed more attention yesterday in order to at least get the green aprons free of this vigorous unsightly pest. It is a difficult, awkward, precise and patient exercise to dig these weeds, but worth it.
And yes, it looks a bit of a mess at present but remember it is a temporary mess as the surrounding apron grasses will soon envelop the sandy patches. Please refer to the Temporary Local Rules for the free relief options if your ball touches these areas.
The question has been asked: why not simply poison this weed? Spray or spot poisoning with a specific herbicide of the rough, fairways and path edges is very effective and that program has begun, led by Super Justin Wells. You will notice a gradual browning of the Crows Foot in the coming days before bare patches will remain in these larger areas.
However the affected ugly green aprons need a more reactive personal approach. Dabbing with Glyphosate poison would work but take forever to see a good finish. By digging the weed and repairing with sand the timeframe of removal, repair and recovery is much quicker and obviously more desirable. The Crows Foot in the greens will be reduced by the oversowing and a permanent fix addressed in the spring.
There are still some remaining Crows Foot close to the greens which the volunteers will get to soon. We appreciate the members patience and understanding and acknowledge and thank yesterday’s volunteers being; Laura Cunning, Margot McNee, Anna Lyons, Cath Reidy, Julie Brown, Cameron Gibson, Al Haydock, Ross McTaggart, John Puttick, Rob Bischof, Rob Brown, Ralph Hockings and Garth Crichton.
Cheers
