BGC stay on top and on track

The Brisbane Golf Club retained its position on the top of the table by defeating Royal Queensland Golf Club 14.5-6.5 in Round 4 of the 2024 BDGA Div 1 Pennant season yesterday.

The win setting up an opportunity, with two rounds remaining, for BGC to win its fifth Div 1 title from the last 6 seasons played and third in a row.

RQ came to BGC looking to claim back the match they lost to BGC at home in Round 1 and also knowing a win would take them ahead of BGC on the table.

The Opens were coming off a 9.5-1.5 win the week before away against Indooroopilly Golf Club and an 8.5-2.5 win in Round 1 against RQ but were facing a much stronger opposition this time around. Three of Queensland’s high-performance squad in Lincoln Morgan, Will Bowen and Harry Takis filled their top three positions.

Our Opens, were up for the task, and secured 6.5 points to record their fourth consecutive win. Winners included Billy Dowling 5&4, Chris Somerfield 4&2, Josh Liston 5&4, Ben Steiler, 2&1, Isaac Rahmani 5&3 and Rory Gorman 4&2. Campbell Kerr squared his match.

The Masters and Juniors were both looking to bounce back after a tough result the previous week where they were only able to win 1 point from 10 matches. Both teams responding well to record 4-1 wins.

In the Masters, the winners were Ian Burgess 5&4, Ash Sturmer 5&3, Stephen Dean 4&3 and Eugene Estella 2up. In the Juniors, the winners were debutant Caleb Marschke 5&3, Tony Cho 7&6, Taj Egea 5&4 and Chase Oberle 2&1.

In the other match played on Sunday Indooroopilly Golf Club jumped ahead of Keperra Golf & Country Club on the table with a 13-8 win. This result ending Keperra’s chances of winning the title in 2024.

The run home will see BGC play Keperra away in Round 5 and Indooroopilly Golf & Country Club in Round 6. One win, or a draw, would be enough to win Div 1 based on a likely superior for and against. RQ will play away in the final two rounds against IGC and Keperra and need to win both matches and hope BGC can’t get at least one point. IGC will play at home against RQ next week and BGC away in Round 6 and would need to win both matches and also hope BGC can’t get at least one more point.

Over four rounds BGC has won 54.5 points and conceded just 29.5. Indooroopilly and RQ are the closest teams in terms of points won and conceded, both on 40 and 44.

BGC are also sitting on top of the table in the Opens and equal top in the Juniors. Our Masters are one point behind Indooroopilly in second.

Members are again encouraged to make the trip to Keperra for Round 5 to provide their support for our team. The matches will commence from 7am. Keperra are the longest serving team in Div 1.
