Green, Tee and Fairway Renovations

Members are advised that The Brisbane Golf Club will be closed from Monday, 16 September 2024 to Thursday, 19 September 2024 inclusive.

The closure will allow new course superintendent, Marcus Hartup and his team to complete green, tee and fairway renovations. If the renovations all go well we are hopeful the course may open earlier on Thursday, 19 September 2024. In the situation that we lose any of these days to weather, then additional days may be added.

Please note the course, temporary driving range, East and West practice greens, Member’s Lounge, Garden Room, Temporary Golf Shop and Locker Rooms will all be closed during this period.

Please refer to the Course Closed Policy for further information.

Members are welcome to collect their golf clubs from storage between 6am and 3pm each day, if required.

Marcus Hartup has prepared the following information for Members:

Purpose of the Renovations

• To improve presentation, health, playability and sustainability of greens; we plan to implement a scheduled greens cultural practice.

To maintain greens in a healthy state a renovation is required. Only one renovation will be completed each year around a schedule of dusting and tining. Renovations of greens is an important maintenance practice to ensure the long-term health of the green playing surface. This includes vertical mowing, hollow coring, topdressing and applying amendments with the primary reason being to eliminate the build-up of organic biomass (thatch), reduce compaction, apply balance amendments and promote a greater amount of gaseous exchange.

Typically, under ideal conditions the greens recovery would be approximately 21 days for full recovery.

Works will also take place on the tees which will be similar to that of the greens.

The fairways and roughs over a course of six weeks will be subject to a weed eradication program in which they will be boom sprayed (twice) with a selective herbicide. During this time they could look unsightly with potential of browning off, however this will be short term as we look to eradicate the current weeds. After the boom sprays have been utilised during the 6 weeks period follow up spot spraying will take place to target any nuisance weeds.

Also during the week of renovations we will look to verti-drain the fairways to relieve compaction and apply a gypsum fertiliser. Our course team will also address the issue of bare patches on our fairways over the coming weeks.

Poa trivialis

Prior to the renovations taking place and to ensure that we get a speedy recovery of the Champion Bermudagrass it is a requirement to treat the overseed Poa trivialis with a selective herbicide which will assist in eradication of the oversown Poa trivialis grass and therefore reduce the competition for growth of the recovering Champion Bermudagrass.

During this process we will see a yellowing off of the Poa trivialis, this is not cause for alarm as it is the process of transitioning to a full Bermudagrass greens for the warmer months.

We will look to apply the selective herbicide on Monday, 2 September 2024 (subject to weather conditions).

We thank Members for their patience and understanding during these essential maintenance works. Please direct any questions, feedback or comments to myself via 0411 412 666 or geoff@brisbanegolfclub.com.au
