Vale Bruce Richter
We are saddened to announce the passing of our 29th President and Honorary Life Member, Bruce Richter, on January 21, 2025.
Bruce joined the Club in 1972, became a Committee member in 1978, and served as Honorary Treasurer until 1985. He was Vice President from 1985 to 1987, President from 1987 to 1990, and received an Honorary Life Membership in 1996.
Professionally, he worked in banking, starting with the Commonwealth Bank and then moving to Finance Corporation of Australia Ltd in 1969. He later joined Esanda Finance around 1984, retiring as Senior State Manager Queensland in July 1990 during his third year as Club President.
Bruce documented the Club’s history in “The Fairway is Mine” over a five-year period using minutes, newspaper items, photos, and members’ recollections. This book was published to coincide with the Club’s Centenary in 1996 and remains a key historical resource.
He maintained the Club’s archives as Club Historian from 1990 to 2024, organising valuable documents and collecting old hickory clubs. He oversaw the transferring of these artifacts to the State Library of Queensland for safekeeping in early 2024, inspecting the new location and ensuring proper preservation and accessibility.
Some of the collected hickory clubs are now displayed in the new M.T. Stafford Golf Shop after restoration by the Tennyson Hickory Players. Bruce played golf twice a week across his years as a member though in recent times his Monday afternoon game with dear friend Ted Callaghan was a particular highlight. While he did not achieve an honour board record, he donated the trophy for the oldest Club Honour Board event, The Midwinter (Blackheath) Medal for many years.
Condolences to his family and friends.
Details of the funeral service will be available at the Club shortly.
