BGC Kicks Off Senior Mid-Week Teams Challenge with Strong Showing at RQ
The Brisbane Golf Club has started its 2025 campaign in Golf Australia’s Senior Mid-Week Teams Challenge with an exciting and competitive first-round match against Royal Queensland Golf Club. The opening round was played on Friday, 17 April at RQ in near-perfect conditions, setting the tone for what promises to be a terrific season.
This match play event pits teams of eight players, four in singles matches played off the stick and four competing in two fourball matches using handicaps, against one another in a round-robin format. Each team must include players aged 55 or older, all holding a current GA handicap.
Both teams embraced the spirit of the event, enjoying a fantastic afternoon of camaraderie and competition. While the matches were hard-fought, the respect and good humour between the two teams stood out.
Singles Matches:
-
Ian Burgess led the team from the top spot with a sensational comeback, turning a two-down deficit with seven holes to play into a 2-up victory. Strong play from our No.1.
-
Peter Lansom battled well in a quality match but went 2 down to a sharp RQ opponent.
-
Mark Davis was simply outstanding, claiming a commanding 4&3 win and earning the nickname “The Push-Up King” for his unique green-reading technique.
-
Peter Martin produced a memorable performance in what his RQ opponent called the best quality fourth singles match he’d played in. Four chip-ins and finishing just two over par capped off a fantastic round for Peter.
Fourball Matches:
-
Geoff Moore and Clint Auty delivered a statement win, taking down RQ’s President and Captain 4&3 with both players performing well under their handicaps.
-
Richard Garnham and Richard Peacock got off to a strong start but couldn’t hold off a surging RQ pair, eventually going down 4&2.
All in all, it was a promising start to the season for BGC. With many more matches to come, both home and away, the team is eager to build on this momentum and push toward the finals stage.
A big thank you to RQ for their hospitality and sportsmanship. We look forward to hosting you at BGC later in the season.
