Senior Teams Challenge – Monday, 19 May 2025

Hi waterlogged golfers
Our Senior Teams Challenge side had an unlucky 3/3 draw against a great bunch of Virginia golfers at their home track yesterday. Considering the rain we’ve had and the flatness and low lying position of the Virginia course, there was surprisingly little water and mud on the fairways. Having said this, we were still the beneficiaries of preferred lies in the general area on the day. Additionally, with their slightly coarse sand, the bunkers played very well and the weather was perfect.
The result of 3/3 in the end was a disappointment given that we won three matches comfortably or better and the other three matches all went to the 18th with us at one point or another being ahead in each.
Here are the individual match summaries:
1. Peter Hargreaves, playing their stand in captain Paul Downey, had a day out. Peter was three up after four holes and four up after six. The only hole he lost was on 11 when Downey made an excellent up and down from the bunker while Peter played a bit too safe. The end result was a huge 7/6 win. At number one, this is a great effort away from home

2. Peter Martin has been tapping into a rich vein of form of late, as it proved yesterday against his opponent, Michael Joel. Marto was in control of all parts of his game and never allowed Joel in the match at any stage for a 5/4 win. An excellent away win Marto

3. Clint Auty had a battle royal with Karl Vorhauser. There was never more than a hole or two in it but unfortunately Clint finished on the wrong side of a two down result on the 18th green

4.  Geoff Moore had a tight battle with Craig Hall. Given they were both off a handicap of seven the match was played off the stick. There was never more than a hole or two in it but unfortunately, when Geoff was two up with five to play, his back started to seize up. This and a few missed putts resulted in a one down result on 18

5. Craig James and Ian Brereton played against Noel McLean and Peter Trappett in the first 4bbb match. Ian, being the low marker, had to give one shot to Craig and two to the Virginia twosome. This was the closest match of the day with Craig’s short game keeping BGC in the match early. BGC was either even or one down all day until they squared the match on the 16th. On the long par four 17th Virginia chipped in for a birdie and then made a great recovery shot from the trees on 18 for a par and a one up win

6. Andrew Mullis and Rob Brown were paired against Darren Shepherd and Scott Hedger in the final 4bbb match. Darren, being the low marker, had to give two shots to the BGC pair and five to his partner. Andrew took five or so holes to find his groove but fortunately Browny was playing well, including a chip in birdie on the 5th to enable Brisbane to be two up after six holes.  They then turned four up and, although they played middling golf from then on, held on for a 2/1 win.

So, the 3rd, 4th and 5th matches could have gone either way and all we needed was to halve one of them to take the points on the day. But that was not to be and all players should be commended for giving their best – a point is better than nothing away from home.

Next week on Thursday 29th we play at BGC against RQ  teeing off at noon.  The team is: singles – Ian Burgess, the Peters – Lansom and Hargreaves and Clint Auty; and 4bbb – Ian Brereton and Darryl Stuckey, Graeme Buckland and Geoff Crozier. Let’s see if we can keep the winning form against RQ going.
Cheers
Browny
