BGC Chasing More Pennant History
The Brisbane Golf Club will tee off its 2025 BDGA Division 1 Pennant campaign on Sunday, 13 July with a rare opportunity to secure a fourth consecutive title, following a remarkable hat-trick of Division 1 Pennant victories in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
The 2025 BDGA Pennant season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent history. Royal Queensland and Indooroopilly Golf Clubs are fielding very talented line-ups across the Junior, Open, and Masters divisions. Adding to the competition, Pacific Golf Club returns to Division 1 after a two-year absence and will be eager to make a strong statement following their promotion from Division 2.
The 2025 campaign sees The Brisbane Golf Club set for a demanding start away from home. The campaign opens with three consecutive away fixtures against Indooroopilly Golf Club, Royal Queensland, and Pacific Golf Club. BGC will then return to familiar territory, finishing the season with three home matches throughout August.
Adding to the 2025 season is the introduction of new BDGA eligibility criteria. Under the updated rules, players must now be both members of a Brisbane-based club and residents of Brisbane to compete. While The Brisbane Golf Club has long attracted elite talent from across the region, thanks to its award-winning coaching program and strong junior development pathway, these changes are expected to sideline several top players for parts of the season.
BGC’s Junior ranks will be led by Elijah Rohas-Smith, who delivered a strong performance at the 2025 BGC Club Championships. He will be joined by last year’s pennant standouts, Tony Cho, and Thomas King, along with promising emerging talent, Dan Brown. Chase Oberle is hopeful to return for a few matches later in the season, pending his international commitments representing The Brisbane Golf Club.
The Brisbane Golf Club’s Open team will feature a strong line-up of elite competitors, including current and former Club Champions Lachlan Jones, George Giblett, Taj Egea, and Campbell Kerr. Adding to the team’s strength is current Queensland Sand Greens Champion, Sam Howse. Billy Dowling, who is currently representing The Brisbane Golf Club on international duties, is also hopeful of making a return to the team later in the season.
In the Masters, Stephen Deane returns for his 42nd Pennant season, an extraordinary accomplishment and a testament to his enduring class. He’ll be supported by Ian Burgess, who recently defended his Senior Club Championship title.
CEO Geoff Kuehner is encouraging members to get behind the team once again.
“While we start the season with three away games, members are encouraged to travel to Indooroopilly, RQ, and Pacific to support the team and enjoy what is always an outstanding standard of golf,” he said.
“BGC is one of the best-supported clubs in the competition, and we’d love to keep that tradition going.”
For those unable to attend in person, coverage will be comprehensive. Weekly team announcements will be published in Member News each Thursday, match reviews will follow every Sunday, and live scores and player profiles will be available on the Club’s Instagram page.
