BGC Triumphs Over RQ
The Brisbane Golf Club secured a valuable away victory yesterday, defeating Royal Queensland Golf Club 12–9 in Round 2 of the BDGA Division 1 Pennant season. The win marks BGC’s first for 2025 and continues an impressive run of results against RQ, making it four consecutive wins.
The win also sees all four teams in Division 1 sitting on equal points after two rounds, each with one win and one loss. Pacific Golf Club tops the ladder with 22 matches won, followed by Indooroopilly with 21, and BGC and RQ tied third with 20.5 games each. However, BGC holds a slight edge, being the only team to register an away win so far this season.
While the team performed outstandingly across the board, one of the standout performances of the day came from our Juniors, who followed up last week’s narrow 3–2 win over Indooroopilly with a dominant 5–0 sweep against RQ. Elijah Rohas-Smith won 2&1, Tony Cho edged out his opponent 1up, Thomas King claimed a 2up win, Darwin Butsmalee cruised home 4&3, and Dan Brown sealed the clean sweep with a 3&2 victory. This outstanding result sees our Juniors sitting at the top of the table in their individual Pennant division.
Playing away is always a challenge, but our Masters team delivered a strong performance to contribute two vital points. Eugene Estella secured a win 2up, while both Ian Burgess and Peter Hargreaves halved their matches.
Facing a talented RQ side led by last week’s Singapore Amateur Open Champion, Harry Takis, our Opens fought valiantly in a tough encounter, narrowly going down 5–6. Importantly, their five match wins were crucial to the overall team victory. Taj Egea, Josh Liston, Ben Steiler, and Shane Sweeney all recorded hard-earned wins, with Lachlan Jones and Ilija Soldan both halving their matches in tight contests.
In the other Round 2 fixture, Pacific Golf Club defeated Indooroopilly Golf Club 12.5–8.5 at Pacific.
BGC will play their final away match, and third on the road, before having three home games in a row, this Sunday against Pacific Golf Club. Indooroopilly will host Royal Queensland. With all teams tightly grouped on the ladder, Round 3 is shaping up to be another pivotal round in what’s already an exciting season.
We encourage as many Brisbane members as possible to support our team on Sunday morning at Pacific. Matches will tee off at 7:00am from both tees, with member support has already proven a difference in 2025.
The team announcements for Round 3 will be published on Thursday.
Live scoring will be available throughout the morning via our Instagram page.
