This month we are honouring past Captain, John Martin.
Captain: John Martin
John became the 52nd Captain of The Brisbane Golf Club in 1982, serving a three-year term until1985.
After joining the Club in 1974 and being given the maximum handicap, John was severely bitten by the “golf bug”, quickly reducing his handicap sufficiently to be selected to play Pennants in 1976. He maintained a single figure handicap for more than 40 years and estimates to have represented the Club at both Open and Senior levels in more than 200 matches as well as the Brisbane District Golf Association in inter-Association competition on 7 occasions.
Although the Club Championship has eluded him (finalist 1992), John has enjoyed success in the Club Foursomes Championship in 1993 and 2001, the Senior Championship in 2000 and in 6 other Honour Board events.
During over 50 years of membership, John served 12 years on the Committee including a term as President from 2000 to 2003 and a further 10 years on the Course Standing and Course Advisory Committees. John was elected to the Brisbane District Golf Association Management Committee in 1996 and went on to serve as President between 2001 and 2004.
During John’s captaincy the Committee took the forthright step of employing a professionally qualified Course Superintendent at a considerably increased salary, a decision which was seen by some at the time as both controversial and extravagant. However any doubts were quickly dispelled as the new expertise saw rapid improvement in course presentation and playing conditions and the framework for the standards we have now grown to expect over recent decades was created.
