Indooroopilly Too Strong at Home
The Brisbane Golf Club opened their 2025 BDGA Division 1 Pennant campaign on Sunday with a hard-fought match against Indooroopilly Golf Club. Despite strong performances in the Open and Junior divisions, BGC went down 12.5–8.5 overall, with Indooroopilly’s strength at home, particularly in the Masters, proving the difference.
Despite the overall result, there were encouraging performances across all divisions. The Open team produced a solid away performance to draw 5.5–5.5, continuing their impressive form after going undefeated through the 2024 season. 2025 Club Champion Lachlan Jones led the charge with a narrow 1up win, supported by victories from George Giblett, Taj Egea, Ben Stieler, and Ilija Soldan. Josh Liston fought hard to square his match and help the team secure a valuable away draw.
The highlight of the day came from the Juniors who showed significant improvement, turning around last year’s 5–0 loss to Indooroopilly with a 3–2 win. It was a standout effort considering Indooroopilly were last season’s Junior Division 1 champions. Wins came from Dan Brown (1up), Darwin Butsamalee (4&3), and Thomas King (5&4).
The home side’s dominance in the Masters division proved decisive. Indooroopilly swept all five points, capitalising on a strong and experienced lineup. Both Stephen Deane and Peter Hargreaves held leads through much of the morning but were narrowly defeated on the 18th in closely contested matches.
Three players made their Pennant debuts for Brisbane Golf Club in the opening round: Shane Sweeney (Opens), Peter Hargreaves (Masters), and Darwin Butsamalee (Juniors.
Looking ahead to Round 2, BGC faces a tough away fixture against Royal Queensland Golf Club, who began their season with an 11.5–9.5 win over Pacific Golf Club. The strong showings by both teams signals that this year’s competition will be tightly contested from start to finish. Pacific were playing in Division 1 for the first time since 2022.
In other Round 2 action, Pacific Golf Club will host Indooroopilly Golf Club, with both sides eager to build early momentum.
Brisbane members are encouraged to show their support for our team this weekend at Royal Queensland. The match will tee off at 7am from both tees.
