BGC Claims Strong Win Over RQ to Set Up Pennant Final Showdown

The Brisbane Golf Club has recorded a comprehensive 14–7 win over Royal Queensland Golf Club in Round 5 of the BDGA Division 1 Pennant season. The result was a solid team performance across all divisions, Opens, Masters and Juniors, and puts BGC at the top of the ladder with one round to play.

The Opens got off to a fast start, winning their first four matches and laying the foundation for the overall victory. They went on to finish 7.5–3.5 winners. Victories came from Cooper Clarke (5&4), Craig Mahon (4&3), Ilija Soldan (3&2), Ben Stieler (8&6), Josh Liston (1up), and Taj Egea (3&1). Campbell Kerr birdied the 18th to square his match in a hard-fought contest against former BGC member John Smolijko.

The Masters delivered their best performance of the season, taking down RQ 4–1 and not conceding a single match. Ian Burgess (4&3), Peter Hargraves (5&3), and Eugene Estella (6&5) were all dominant, while Stephen Deane and Ash Sturmer added valuable halves to complete the division win.

Our Juniors continued their undefeated run this year with another impressive performance, earning 3.5 points. Wins came from Darwin Butsumalee (4&3), Thomas King (2&1), and Eshan Singh (2&1), while Tony Cho showed great composure to win the final two holes and square his match.

With this result, BGC remains level on wins with Pacific Golf Club, and both clubs will now meet in a highly anticipated final round clash to decide the 2025 Division 1 Pennant title. A victory would secure BGC’s sixth title in the past seven completed seasons (2017, 2018, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025). The Division 1 competition was not completed in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.

Pacific, a proud and competitive club, were the last team prior to BGC to win three Division 1 titles in a row and have a strong history of their own. BGC will need to be at its best next Sunday to secure the pennant at home.

Next year will also mark Brisbane Golf Club’s 10th consecutive season in Division 1, a milestone that reflects the strength of our pennant program.

In the other Round 5 fixture, Indooroopilly Golf Club defeated Pacific Golf Club 15–6. That result means the loser of next week’s Indooroopilly vs Royal Queensland match will be relegated to Division 2, with RQ having the home advantage.

Members are encouraged to come down and support the team in what promises to be a thrilling final round. Matches will tee off from both the 1st and 10th tees at 7:00 am.

Team announcements will be made this Thursday, and live scores will be available via a new scoring platform developed by BGC member Geoff Crozier. The link will be shared in the team announcement post.
