BGC Keep Title Hopes Alive
The Brisbane Golf Club defeated Indooroopilly Golf Club 12.5–8.5 in Round 4 of the 2025 BDGA Division 1 Pennant season on Sunday, a pivotal victory that keeps hopes of a fourth consecutive Division 1 title very much alive.
Now sitting just two points behind Pacific Golf Club, who narrowly defeated Royal Queensland Golf Club 11–10 in their own Round 4 clash, BGC must win both remaining home fixtures, against RQ and Pacific, over the next fortnight to stay in contention. A fourth straight title would mark an extraordinary achievement for the club, making it six championships in the past seven seasons.
The final score against Indooroopilly belied how tight the contest really was, with all three grades needing strong finishes over the back nine to secure the vital win. The Juniors were in a precarious position late, with only one point secured out of five. However, crucial comebacks from Number 1, Tony Cho and a massive, green-length putt by Darwin Butsamalee on Hole 9 added a further 1.5 points. Aahan Anard continued his perfect start to his pennant career with a 4&2 win, helping the Juniors remain undefeated this season.
The Masters, who were whitewashed 5–0 in their first meeting with Indooroopilly earlier in the season, turned the tables on Sunday with a crucial 2.5-point contribution. Down early in most matches, the group rallied. Stephen Deane delivered a 3&2 birthday win, Eugene Estella edged out his opponent 1up, and Peter Hargraves battled hard to square his match.
In the Open division, BGC were eager to bounce back from last week’s loss and did so emphatically with a 7.5–3.5 win. The team showed its depth and class with victories by Lachlan Jones (3&2), George Giblett (5&4), Kai Komulainen (2&1), Josh Liston (4&3), Campbell Kerr (4&2), Craig Mahon (4&2), and Cooper Clarke (4&3), while Ilija Soldan added a half point by squaring his match.
With individual pennants still on the line in each grade, BGC will be aiming for strong finishes not only to chase the overall title but also to claim both the Juniors and Opens titles. Round 5 sees BGC host Royal Queensland in a must-win clash, while Indooroopilly will look to avoid relegation when they take on ladder leaders Pacific Golf Club.
Members are strongly encouraged to show their support next Sunday, with matches teeing off at 7:00 am from both the 1st and 10th tees. Round 5 team announcements will be made Thursday, and live scoring will be available throughout the morning on the BGC Instagram page.
