Team Announcement: Round 1 Pennants

The Brisbane Golf Club will play its Round 1 match in the 2022 BDGA Pennant’s season against Keperra Country Golf Club this Sunday, 17 July at home. This is the sixth consecutive season BGC has played in Division 1, having won in 2017 and 2018. Unfortunately, the last two Pennant’s seasons have been cancelled due to COVID.

In the corresponding fixture last year, Keperra started the season with a win against BGC. This was a tough loss for BGC who have enjoyed a healthy rivalry with Keperra over the years. The Club will be looking to start the season on a much more positive note in 2022 and regain the home dominance it has enjoyed in the past.

BGC has assembled a strong team for 2022 with the average handicap across the 21 players named this week in the Opens, Masters and Juniors being just 1.3. Three players are unavailable for selection this week due to international duties including Sam Slater, Billy Dowling and Campbell Kerr. Sam is playing in the 74thSingapore Open Amateur Championships starting next week, while Billy is playing in the IMG Junior World Championships being played at Torrey Pines. At the time of writing this announcement he was T4 in a field of 199 players. Campbell is on his way back from Europe. His best finish was second place in the West of Scotland Matchplay Championship.

Our Open’s team is Cooper Clarke, Tom Deane, Wade Edwards, Sam Howse, Luke Kjeldal, John Smoljko, Ilija Soldan, Chris Somerfield, Ben Stieler, Paul Todd and Conor Whitelock.

Two players in Cooper Clarke and Paul Todd will be making their debuts for BGC while Chris Somerfield will back up after his recent win in the Brisbane Junior Amateur Championships played last week.

Our Junior team will also feature two debutants in Justin McCormack and Chase Oberle. Both are outstanding juniors with Chase the current Club Champion at Brookwater Golf Club.

Our Junior team is Demos Drakos, Justin McCormack, Chase Oberle, Harvey Palmer and Eric Yeon.

Our Master’s team will feature Eugene Estella for the first time. Eugene has played in the Opens for a number if years and his eligibility for the Masters will certainly add strength to that team. He will again be supported by the experience of Stephen Deane who is one of our most capped Pennant’s players in the history of the Club.

Our Masters team is Ian Burgess, Stephen Deane, Eugene Estella, Phil Lynem and Ash Sturmer.

In the other match this Sunday, Redcliffe Golf Club will play Pacific Golf Club at Redcliffe with the former looking to defend their title from 2019.

We once again encourage as many Members as possible to come out and catch the live action from 7am off both tees.

Live score updates will be available via our Facebook page.
