RQ too strong for BGC in Round 3
The Brisbane Golf Club travelled to Royal Queensland Golf Club last Sunday for Round 3 of the 2023 BDGA pennant’s season. The match putting the only two remaining undefeated teams against each other, with BGC on three points and RQ on four points.
A close and exciting match was expected and that was certainly what was delivered, with the two full strength teams, keeping the result ‘live’ until the final 15 minutes of the morning. In the end RQ were too strong winning 11.5 to 9.5.
The Opens played extremely well away from home and did an amazing job to secure 5 points out of a possible 11. Four of our top five players won their matches including Billy Dowling (2/1), Sam Howse (4/2), Isaac Rahmani (2/1) and Chris Somerfield (3/2). Craig Mahon, playing at number 11, continued his undefeated season, with a 6/5 win.
Coming off a 5-0 win at home in the previous week, our Juniors, faced a tougher challenge on the away course. Unfortunately, that was the case, and they were only able to secure 1.5 points with a win to Campbell Kerr (6/5) and a half to Harvey Palmer. Playing away is never easy and our juniors pushing 3 of the 5 matches to be decided on the last hole is a credit to them.
The Masters team has a successful outing, defeating RQ, 3-2 with wins to Stephen Deane (5/4), Ian Burgess (1up) and Ash Sturmer (3/2). This was a wonderful result away from home and after three rounds sees them just point behind Keperra Golf and Country Club for the Masters pennant. Brian McKerr was a late replacement for Phil Somerfield and it was great to see him make his debut for BGC.
Once again, RQ was presented magnificently. It was a privilege to play the course that hosts the Australian PGA championship.
In Round 4, BGC will play Keperra at home. Keperra lost at home to Redcliffe Golf Club in Round 3 (10-11) and will be desperate for a win against BGC to erase the memories of that defeat. Keperra have a long and distinguished history in Division 1 and while they are always a very tough opponent, after that loss, we expect to see them at even another level.
In the other match this Sunday, RQ will host Redcliffe Golf Club at home. The race for the Division 1 title remains open, and every match is crucial for all teams who can all still win and all still be relegated back to Division 2.
Members are again encouraged to provide their support for our team. The matches will tee off from 7am with the Opens on Hole 1 and the Masters followed by the Juniors on Hole 10.
