BGC Wins
The Brisbane Golf Club has won the 2023 Division 1 Pennant.
The win was secured with a Round 6 victory against Royal Queensland Golf Club 13 – 8 on Sunday.
This is BGC’s fourth Division 1 Pennant title in the last five seasons and it’s second back to back. The win also means The Brisbane Golf Club is again the Champions in both the Men’s and Women’s premier pennant competitions in Brisbane.
While both BGC and RQ finished the season on eight points, BGC’s superior for and against proved the difference. BGC winning 77.5 points to RQ’s 69 and conceding 48.5 points to RQ’s 57 across the six rounds. BGC won all three of its home games in 2023 and had two ties away, one at Keperra in Round 1 and the other at Redcliffe in Round 5. The Club’s only defeat was at RQ away where they lost 11.5 – 9.5.
In addition to winning the overall pennant, our Juniors won their individual pennant at as did our Opens while our Masters finished second. Our Juniors won 5 of their 6 matches to secure 10 points, the Opens had 4 wins and 1 tie for 9 points and the Masters had 3 wins for 6 points. The year couldn’t have ended better with the win on Sunday set up with wins in all three grades. The Juniors winning 3 – 2, the Opens winning 6.5 – 3.5 and the Masters winning 3.5 – 1.5.
The Juniors were challenged early in Round 6 but in the end their home course experience and provided the difference. Taj Ega and Chase Oberle securing wins and Campbell Kerr and Justin McCormack valuable halves.
The Open’s only lost of the year was to RQ in Round 3 by just 1 point the rematch was agin expected to be a tight affair. BGC, as they have been all year, were super impressive securing every match from positions 4 to 10 and squaring match 3. Congratulations to Greg Mitchell and Hugo Koch who made their pennant debuts for the Club in Round 6.
Not unlike the Juniors, the Masters started slowly and were rewarded in the end by their ability to stay in the match. Both Phil Somerfield and Stephen Deane were behind early with Phil turning it around to win 3/2 and Stephen securing a half from dormie 3 down. Ian Burgess produced another consistent performance to secure his point and remain undefeated this season.
In the other Round 6 match, Keperra defeated Redcliffe Golf Club 14 – 7 away to retain their place in Division 1 in 2024. Unfortunately Redcliffe will be relegated to Division 2 next year.
