Two wins from two starts for BGC

The Brisbane Golf Club secured their second win of the season yesterday and sit on top of the table as the only undefeated team in the 2024 BDGA Div 1 Pennant season.

BGC defeating Keperra Country & Golf Club 14.5-6.5 with wins in both Opens and Juniors and a draw in the Masters.

The win was a test of the squad’s depth with 5 players from the previous week’s match against RQ unavailable for selection. Interestingly every one of the 5 replacements had big wins including Isaac Rahmani 6&4, John Houston 7&6, Rory Gorman 5&3, debutant Matt Field 8&7 and Chase Oberle 5&3.

KGC have been regulars in Div 1 since 2014, BGC started in 2017, and matches between the two clubs have always been played in the best of spirits.

The Opens produced 8 points out of a possible 11 on Sunday and sit on top of the Open’s ladder after two rounds. In addition to the overall pennant, pennants are also contested in each division.

Again our 2024 Club Champion runner up, Craig Mahon secured our first point of the day playing at number 11 with a 6&5 win. Other winners in the Opens not already mentioned include George Giblett (1up), Ben Stieler (5&4) and Billy Dowling (7&6). Billy played his friend and caddie, Aflie Ward from the Queensland Open a couple of year ago. The two combined at the ages of 15 and 13 respectively back then for rounds of 72-73 to just miss the cut by one.

Keperra’s Masters have always been strong and BGC fought hard to secure 2.5 points and the draw. Steve Ward and Stephen Deane both secured 3&1 wins and Ash Sturmer squared his match.

The Juniors secured 4 wins to defeat Keperra 4-1. Just like the Opens, the Juniors also sit on top of their table early in the season. Chase Oberle, who only just returned from representing Golf Australia in the USA, won his match 5&3. Elijah Rohas-Smith (2up), Tony Cho (4&2) and Thomas King (2&1) also won their matches to all remain undefeated after two rounds.

In the other match played over the weekend, RQ hosted Indooroopilly Golf Club and won 13.5-7.5.

In Round 3, BGC will play Indooroopilly Golf Club across the river. Indooroopilly have just returned to Div 1 after winning Div 2 last year and have started the season with two losses. They have had a tough draw so far with two away games and are expected to improve significantly at home.

Members are again encouraged to provide their support for our team against Indooroopilly. The match will commence from 7am.
