BGC undefeated after Round 3, just

BGC tied 10.5-10.5 with Indooroopilly Golf Club yesterday to remain undefeated after three rounds of the 2024 BDGA Div 1 Pennant season.

Wins away are always difficult and the one point was a solid result for BGC given the home advantage IGC has.

The story of the day was the performance of the Opens who secured an amazing 9.5 points from a possible 11 points away. This was after the Masters and Juniors were only able to secure 1 point from their 10 matches on the other side of the course.

The overall result came down to the very last match between BGC’s 2024 Club Champion, George Giblett and IGC’s Mark Draper. Mark won the Australian Open Mixed Doubles with Sam Stosur in 2005 and also that year won the Victoria Open as a professional golfer. George late in the match was 5 down but played beautifully in front of a large gallery to win the last hole and square the match to ensure the tie overall.

Other winners in the Opens included Billy Dowling 6&5, Sam Howse 6&5, Lachlan Jones 3&1, Campbell Kerr 4&1, Chris Somerfield 6&5, Josh Liston 2&1, Isaac Rahmani 3&1, Rory Gorman 5&4 and Craig Mahon 2&1.

The Masters were playing a strong team who had defeated RQ 3-2 the week before. At home Indooroopilly were too strong securing a maximum 5 points from the 5 matches played.

The Juniors were able to secure a valuable point away with Elijah Rohas-Smith winning his match 5&4. Elijah is the only undefeated player in the Juniors after three rounds. At the half way mark three Clubs including BGC, Keperra and Indooroopilly are tied at the top of the Juniors table with 2 wins each. BGC will host Indooroopilly in Round 6 and looks forward to reciprocating the wonderful hospitality received. This shows the competitive nature of the junior competition.

Overall BGC sit on top of the Div 1 ladder with two wins and a tie. Royal Queensland Golf Club who defeated Keperra Country & Golf Club 14-7 in Round 3 are second with two wins and a loss. Keperra are third with one win, two losses and Indooroopilly fourth on 1 point with two losses and a tie. The table is closer than it appears as RQ have now played all of their home matches with BGC, Keperra and Indooroopilly still each having two matches to play at home.

In Round 4, BGC will play RQ at home. BGC were able to upset RQ away in Round 1 and RQ will have the opportunity to take back the two points lost on that day. If BGC are able to win they will firm up their place on top of the ladder.

Members are again encouraged to provide their support for our team against RQ The matches will commence from 7am from both Hole 1 (Opens) and Hole 12 (Masters and Juniors).
