Course Update – Wednesday, 27 November 2024

The following course update has been prepared by our Course Superintendent, Marcus Hartup and Assistant Course Superintendent, Alex Blakey. These will be published fortnightly in Member News and also on the Feed in our App. Videos will also be produced again on a regular basis starting shortly.

Course Update – Wednesday, 27 November 2024

  • Wild weather continued last week, as we saw 70mm of rainfall on Friday alone, bringing the total of November to roughly 280mm.
  • The 4th, 17th, 5th, 3rd, 19th and 20th, all suffered from the excessive downpour as Moolabin Creek rose to stressful heights with the high tide. Holes 19 and 4 were island greens for a short period, before the tide started to go out and the water level dropped.
  • Thankfully, the recent downpours had already flushed out a lot of the rubbish that comes with the creek, seeing minimal debris collect on fairways and tees.
  • Greens have received their biweekly dusting, and are looking healthy after copious rainfall last week. Regular PGR applications should see them tighten up again after an initial growth from the weather. They continue to roll at 9.5ft.
  • The Bunkers on course have really suffered from the rain, with plenty of wash outs and silt rising up through the sand profile. We have started to repair bunkers out on course, with ongoing drainage investigation for those that are holding water and hope to have them back in shape by the end of the week.
  • Tees have really responded to the rain and we’ve got good coverage. A few weeds popping up in areas that we are managing, as we also look to tidy up our garden beds surrounding the Teeing area.
  • Fairways, we are finally up to cutting the fairways twice a week, which means that you’ll likely see the fairway mowers out more frequently in the field. As we look to stay on top of clipping yield, we ask to please be courteous of our operators, some who are still learning the lay of the land, and ensure the safety of both staff and golfers are the highest priority.
  • Landscape and plantation areas are growing rapidly, and we strive to stay on top given the recent wet weather. Constant herbicide applications are being made to weed prone areas (when possible), and we will do our best to mitigate the weed infestation in the out of play areas.
  • The course as a whole has held up really well given the amount of water that was seen in the last two weeks. Areas that were saturated on Sunday were allowed to dry out, ensuring that carts were back in play all week with minimal damage. We can’t emphasise enough how we appreciate the understanding of golfers when we need to take the carts off the course so as not to cause more damage and allow for a return of healthy grass.
  • Plenty of spray applications to come on the course, as we look to manage growth and fertility at this time of year, as well as some manual weeding on greens, tees and garden beds.
  • We our best efforts will be made to keep the Yeerongpilly course in play as much as we can through the wet months, and thank everyone for their understanding when we need to reroute.

If you have any questions or feedback on the course, please forward it to our CEO, Geoff Kuehner via geoff@brisbanegolfclub.com.au. He will forwarded it to Marcus and Alex for a response.

The water came up the fairway on 17. Almost triggering an evacuation of the maintenance shed.
