Senior Team’s Challenge – Match Report v Gailes

The Senior Team’s Challenge was this week played against Gailes Golf Club. with Gailes were too good, defeating BGC 5/1. Gailes have always been a very hard team to beat at their home fortress. That proved true again today. The course was in very good shape but our team, apart from number one Stephen Deane, found chipping and putting into the strong grain very tricky.
Highlights and lowlights of the day include:
  • Stephen Deane, our only winner, getting up in a very close match one up on the 18th. I think both players were worn out after 16 holes because they both bogeyed the last two easy holes. Deano’s effort was herculean because he only got back into Brisbane at midnight last night after playing three tough senior golf games in Sydney in the previous three days
  • Phil Lynem played their captain who was in hot form. Phil was six down after eight holes with his opponent three under the card at that stage.  Phil then brought his opponent back down to his level by winning the next three holes but after that, the Gailes captain steadied to win the match on the 15th
  • Peter Lansom was very unlucky to lose his match on the 18th after being up for much of the day. To put things into perspective, five years ago his opponent, David Evans, was number one in Australia (may have even been the world)! Oh……that’s right……it was in the 50-55-year-old age group in tennis.
  • Clark Anderson fought doggedly after being dormie three down and finally going down on the last after playing a miraculous chip that was unlucky not to go in to halve the match
  • Darryl Stuckey and Craig Mills faced some hot opposition in the first 4bbb match. After six holes there had been a total of six birdies with four from the Gailes team including a 60-foot putt drained for a birdie on the 2nd
  • The final pair of Patrick Dixon and Mike Murphy came up against a cagy pair with their low marker having a very unusual silky smooth stroke in both putting and full shots.  His game proved the difference between the two teams.
Next week we play Wynnum Golf Club away on Thursday, 18 May 2023.
