Senior Team’s Challenge – Match Report v Indooroopilly

We had a great 3.5/2.5 result at Indooroopilly on Tuesday, 24 May.

The course itself (we played the Blue then the Red nine) was in really good condition so there was no excuse not to play good golf with the weather being glorious.

  • Peter Lansom played some really solid golf to be two up after sixteen holes but his opponent finished well for the match to finish all square.
  • Clark Anderson, in his own words, played a rather scrappy match but was disciplined enough to hold it together for a 4/3 win. I only saw the tee shot on the 1st of this match, a hole that Clark birdied!
  • Geoff Moore had a really good battle in his match and, sitting one down on the 16th tee, swung at his drive and something went crack in his lower back. He lost that hole but then valiantly won the next with a brilliant chip that finished an inch from the cup. Heading up the last one down, he decided, with his body failing him badly, he would hit an iron off the tee. Unfortunately, his connection was poor and he was not able to get the win on that hole that he needed to square the match. Hopefully, Geoff can make a speedy recovery and his injury isn’t serious.
  • Geoff Holding also had a very close match and played some great golf against a very steady opponent. Sitting dormy one up on the final tee he boomed his drive a mile down the right-hand side close to the water. Unfortunately, his next two shots had altercations with trees and he thus lost the last hole to finish all square for the day. He rued the fact that a bit of local knowledge would have allowed him to make a better club selection for his second shot.
  • The first 4BBB match was a corker. Richard Garnham was smashing his drives prodigious distances and the other Richard (Mr Peacock I believe) was the perfect foil down the middle. Going up the 18th hole the match was all square and it looked like the two Richards would bring home the bacon. But Peter Nimmo, the experienced opposition player, had other ideas. He played a brilliant third shot to the back of the green to set up a putting competition with Mr. Garnham to decide the match. Both players narrowly missed their birdie putts and the match finished all square
  • The final match was one to behold in the earlier stages. Mike Murphy, who normally never misses the middle of the fairway and chips and putts from everywhere, was out of sorts. Fortunately, his partner, Marto, was in form and held things together for the first six holes with the BGC boys holding a one-hole advantage. Then the fireworks began. Mike hit one straight on the par three 7th which went through the green by four metres. He promptly sank the birdie putt from off the green to win the hole. On the difficult 8th hole Marto had to give shots to the other three but was good enough to get the half himself. Then the fireworks continued on the 9th. Mike played a good 3rd shot from a long way out to be pin high on the right edge of the severely back-to-front sloping green. His 25-foot putt had six feet of break in it but this proved a trifling issue for Mike – he sunk it for another win. Then on the 10th hole, after hitting a very poot 2nd shot to put himself behind a tree on the left, Mike played a great low-punched five iron to be pin high on the right edge, 35 feet from the pin. The putt proved no problem for Mike, who was seeing the hole as a huge crater, and his 3rd birdie in four holes took them to four up, a lead they never relinquished for a 4/3 win.

Our next match is again Redland Bay at home on Tuesday, 30 May.
