Senior Team’s Challenge – Match Report v Wynnum

After some seesawing matches, BGC finished up with a draw (3-3) result against Wynnum Golf Club at Wynnum yesterday. Two of the first four holes were played under modified conditions.  The par-four first being modified to a short par three teeing off from where a good drive would normally finish and the third being out of play. The situation with the first hole has resulted from resident complaints regarding noise and errant drives. The fourth hole, which is normally a long par four, was turned into a short par four to a tricky temporary green followed by a short par three to the normal fourth green.

Craig Mills had earlier in the week mentioned to me that he may be a doubtful starter so I took my clubs, just in case.  It turned out that I was needed which meant that my report on some matches is a bit sketchy. Having said that:

  • Deano continued his winning ways at the top with a solid two-up win on the final hole
  • Peter Lansom had another tough day losing 3/2 after a close match through the first nine or so holes
  • In the match of the day, Geoff Moore squared his match by winning the last hole.  His opponent was sinking putts from everywhere early and took a three-up lead after nine holes when Geoff was only one over par. Geoff continued to make pars and eventually, his opponent’s putter deserted him which gave Geoff a chance to peg the lead back
  • Geoff Holding took an early four-up lead and, after advice from his playing partner (Mr Moore), played in with conservative golf to win 5/4 – a great win away from home
  • Craig James and Rob Brown had a shocking start being four down after five holes. They then fought back to be two down after 13 holes and with only one more shot to give their higher handicapped opponents, thought they were in with a real chance. But alas no, their opponents birdied two of the next three holes to close out the match.  Craig had a chance to extend the match past the 16th by shooting a hole-in-one but his nine iron finished a few feet short!; and
  • The final four-ball match was a doozy. Richard Garnham and Mike Murphy won the first three holes and then promptly lost the next three.  The first halved hole came on the 8th! Our intrepid two then found themselves a couple up early on in the back nine but their opponents fought back well to square the match on the 18th.  Richard boomed his drive on the last to be only a metre or two short of the creek crossing the fairway 70 metres out.  Unfortunately, his shot from there didn’t hold the green which left him a tricky up and down in the fading light to win the match which was not to be.
Next week we play Indooroopilly Golf Club away on Tuesday, 23 May 2023.
