Senior Team’s Challenge – Match Report v Nudgee

The boys had a really tough day at Nudgee yesterday on their Bulka course for a 4.5/1.5 loss.  Most of the matches were very close all day but the home team managed the tricky greens and pin placements a bit better than our guys.

Here are the individual match reports:
  • Stephen Deane had a ding-dong battle with avid Rabbitohs supporter, Brett Ritchie – he has South tattooed on his back left calf and Sydney on his back right calf – for a loss on the last hole.  The match was all square teeing off the par three 17th hole.  Brett two-putted for his par from long range and Deano had a chance to lock in a match half, if not a win, by sinking his birdie putt from 20 feet.  His putt was a good chance of going in but unfortunately just missed and finished downhill five feet past the hole. He then missed his par putt to go dormy one down and couldn’t make the long birdie putt he need to square the match on the last
  • Ian Burgess played a very steady match to win 4/2 against their captain Kim Johansen, who was hampered by a back issue. A notable hole in the match was the short 12th.  Longer hitters tend to play their drive toward the right down the 4th fairway, which takes the trees between the two holes out of play. Ian did this really well but wind got hold of his wedge shot to the green and sent his ball into the penalty area left of the green which resulted in his only lost hole, I think. Interestingly the winning players of this hole in the group, Deano and Kim didn’t need to hit any putts on the hole because their opponents conceded the hole beforehand
  • Richard Garnham, playing his 1st singles match in the STC competition, had a good battle with their number three player, Barry Quinn. Barry birdied holes 12 and 13 to put him square with the card and three up in the match.  Richard was playing quite well himself, he tapped in for a birdie on 13 after a brilliant wedge in, to halve the hole. From there the match remained unchanged for a 3/2 loss for BGC
  • The 4th singles match pitted two nuggetty players against each other in Clark Anderson and Graham Williams. Both players hit the ball solidly but Graham’s putting proved the difference for a 5/4 win to Nudgee
  • The match of the day was the first 4bbb game. Our pair of Richard Peacock and Mike Murphy battled valiantly and, although never able to put their noses in front, managed to square the match on the 17th hole and halve the last with pars.  The highlight of the match was holes 16 and 17 when the result was in the balance. Going up the 16th the match was all square but Malcolm Smith from Nudgee hit his wedge shot to tap in range for an easy birdie which BGC could not match. The next hole, a mid-length par three, was almost the reverse, with Mike hitting his four rescue to pin high 12 feet away.  Nudgee was able to do very well to par the hole, but Mike then cooly sunk his tricky downhill birdie putt to square the match
  • The final 4bbb match was also a really close affair.  Peter Martin and Craig Mills battled their way back to be all square on the 16th tee.  Ross Appleby got his 5th and final shot on this hole and used it, like most of his other four shots earlier in the day, very well. His second-shot wedge to the green finished closer than any of the other player’s balls and he had the simple task of two-putting from 12 feet for an easy, nett birdie, win. Their other player then played a great shot to the tricky 17th to 15 feet and neither Marto or Craig could par the hole which gave the Nudgee team a 2/1 win.
I have been advised that Gailes beat Carbrook at Carbrook yesterday which means they take a four-point lead over BGC in the points table.  We need a big win against them when we host them at home in our next match on 29 June.
Next week we have a bye.
