BGC win well at home

The Brisbane Golf Club remains undefeated in the 2023 BDGA pennant’s season after two rounds. The Club has followed up a tie with Keperra Golf & Country Club away in Round 1 with an 18-3 defeat of Redcliffe Golf Club at home in Round 2 last Sunday.

Redcliffe are the only other Club to have won the Division 1 title since 2017 and were looking to bounce back following a lost to Royal Queensland Golf Club the week prior at home.

However, on the day BGC were too strong with all three grades performing exceptionally well and contributing equally to a comprehensive overall win. The Opens winning 9-2, the Masters winning 4-1 and our Juniors winning 5-0.

With 11 matches played each week in the Opens the result in this grade often determines the overall winner on the day. This week against Redcliffe that certainly was the case with only two matches lost. Winners included Billy Dowling (4/3), Lachlan Jones (1up), Chris Somerfield (3/2), Mitchell Vesper (2/1), Ilija Soldan (5/3), Ben Steiler (2/1), John Houston (6/5), Rory Gorman (3/2) and Graig Mahon (2up). This is a wonderful result and sets up an exciting match up with RQ next week who were had a dominant 10-1 win against Keppera.

The Juniors completed a clean sweep and were dominant as expected at their home course. Lead by current Club Champion and NSW Junior Champion, Taj Egea, who won 8/7, the team are now two wins from two starts this year. On 7 points they sit at the top of the table with RQ in the race for the Junior pennant. Congratulations also to the other winners on the day including Chase Oberle (7/5), Campbell Kerr (5/3), Justin McCormack (4/2) and Harvey Palmer (7/6).

The Masters bounced back from a 2-3 result the previous week to secure 4 points against Redcliffe with Ash Sturmer and Stephen Deane recording 7/6 wins. Other winners were Ian Burgess and Eugene Estella (both 2up). The experienced Phil Somerfield fought hard all day but was unable to recover from being 3 down thru 4 holes. He eventually lost his match 1 down.

Lachlan Jones, was the Player of the Day. After being 1 down through 16, he fought back to win both 17 and 18 to win 1 up.

A special mention to players who recorded their first ever pennant win for BGC in Round 1 and 2 including Lachlan Jones, Isaac Rahmani, Mitchell Vesper, John Houston, Rory Gorman, Phil Somerfield and Taj Egea.

In Round 3, BGC will play Royal Queensland Golf Club away. RQ have returned to Division 1 this year and have so far won both of their opening matches.

In the other match this Sunday, Keperra Country Golf Club will play Redcliffe Golf Club at Keperra. Keperra have 1 point from after two round while Redcliffe are on 0.

It was wonderful to see so many Members out on Sunday and Members are welcome to travel to Royal Queensland Golf Club to again provide their support. The matches will tee off from 7am with the Opens on Hole 1 and the Masters followed by the Juniors on Hole 10.
