Brisbane GC Seniors News June – Preview July

June has been a good month for us.

  • Senior Midweek Challenge Team still within sight of a semi-final.
  • AUSOOM Level – Australian Seniors Matchplay provides some shock results.
  • More good results at QSOOM level.

MIDWEEK SENIOR CHALLENGE.

With 2 weeks to go in the regular season, we currently lie in third position on the ladder. Gailes have their nose in front and Indooroopilly are in front of us on a games won countback.

We face Indooroopilly next Thursday at home. A win here should see us clear into the semis, as the week after Indooroopilly travel to Gailes, while we are on our bikes over to Redland Bay.

Any support on Thursday would be welcomed – the action starts at 12 Noon and the 4BBB should be finished around 6pm.

AUSOOM.

Mid June brought us the Australian Seniors Matchplay Championship. We had 3 entries in the 32 players. A very strong field, with no less than 6 ‘plus’ markers.

Stephen Deane went to the tournament as the number 14 seed. His first match in his self-proclaimed ‘group of death’ was a difficult assignment against Adrian Alzino (19) from RQ, which ended in a half. With eventual winner Ian Frost(3) in the same group, it would come down to the margin of victory against local Phil Towle(30) to see who would go through to the higher groups. Steve was able to beat Phil 2/1, however, Adrian was able to beat Phil 5/4, while Steve lost his last pool match to Ian Frost 4/2. Steve then found himself in Group 3 for the positional rounds, which meant he could finish no better than 17th and no worse than 24th. A loss to Adam Cornell (11) of Royal Sydney, a win over his old nemesis in Col Bloomfield (15) of Wollongong 1up, and a loss to Ken Brewer (1) 2/1 saw Steve finish in 22nd place.

Ian Burgess had his first foray into the world of AUSOOM in this tournament and was the 24th seed. He promptly dusted Chris Hicks (9) of Eastlakes 3/2. Andrew Robb (8) of Glenmore got the better of him in the afternoon 3/2, but Tuesday morning saw a return to the winners circle with a big 6/5 win over David Gleeson (25). This put Burge into Group 2, where he won a hard fought battle against myself at (32) 3/2. He then ran into number (4) seed, Brad Dowling from Southport and lost 3/1, with his final game against Mark Wilson (22) of Wollongong ending in a 2/1 loss – Burge finished a very credible 12th overall. Well done!

Fortunately for me, they only had 32 entries. With my handicap rapidly expanding, another entry would have seen me on the sidelines. Unfortunately for the Number 1 seed, Ken Brewer, I suddenly found something that I could work with halfway down the M1. It’s been dubbed the biggest upset in the history of the tournament, as I drained a 20ft birdie putt on the last to beat him 1 up. Ken has won 2 of the last 3 Australian Senior events and plays off +2. Anyway, I managed a half against Greg Harnwell (16) of Kogarah (Deaney said an equally impressive result after the mentally draining morning), but went down to current NSWSOOM Champion David MacLelland (17) 3/2 the next morning – slotting me into Group 2. A close loss to Ian Burgess(24), followed by a belting from Mark Taylor (12) of Cromer 6/5. My last match was with Steve Clarke (31) from Ballina who beat me 3/2, eventually finishing in 16th spot. An overachievement!

QSOOM.

Two Qsoom events in the last month.

Maroochy River.

Stephen Deane returns to the QSOOM events and posts a nice result. Graeme Bell gets beaten on a countback for the nett – but we should ring the winners bell anyway! Good results guys!
