Pennants on Friday 26 April 2024

All 3 teams played pennants today, being spread around the environs of Brisbane.

Yellow Diamond played against Nudgee at Pacific. After all the upheaval and construction at Pacific over the last couple of years, everything is looking rather good, both the New Club house and the course. But goodness, were the greens fast – downhill putts were absolute knee tremblers, as the ball just would not stop!

The team battled valiantly finally winning 4/3, with Angelina Drakos winning 4/2, Perri Ilott 5/3, Fiona Elsdon 5/4, and Margot McNee 1 up on the 18th.  Angela Fong ran into a player who managed 7 pars and one birdie on the front 9, finding it hard to do anything against such a hot streak, going down 5/4, with Lisa Schoutrop finding the adjustment from Brisbane paced greens to Pacific greens a huge challenge losing 4/2, with Ann Fell hanging in to the end, with her putt just missing on the 18th hole, finishing 1 down.

A good 4/3 win against tough competitors.

Sapphire Zone 2, affectionately known as the “Kerry/Kelly Gang”, played at Redland Bay against RQ, losing 4/3.  Pat Goh and Kerrie O’Callaghan squaring their games, with Catherine Morgan and Anna Roberts winning 1 up, and Louise Kelly, Kelly Stoddart and Kerry Estella all losing their games.  “A great experience for all players, especially after their landslide victory last week´ said Captain Kate.

Sapphire Zone 3, playing the tight, hilly course of Ashgrove against Oxley, found the going tough, not only having to give 40 shots on the day, but having to overcome the fact that one of their players having an urgent overnight admission to hospital, with Helen Caris finally stepping into the breach at the 9th hour, preventing the need to concede the final game. So, a 4½ to 2½ loss was a credible score. Angela Cottrell 3/1 and Vicki Mounts 4/3 winning 2 important points. Sue Eagleton, drawing her match, adding the final half point to the total. Despite Leigh Francis, Helen Caris, Julie Brown and Kathryn Ash playing the best game they could play on the day, could not add to the overall team tally. “A very hard course and lots of shots” quoted Helen.

The fourth team, Weekend Yellow Diamond will take on Keperra at RQ on Sunday. Wishing the players, Safina Kyprianou, Lynette Horswood, Jodi Holmes, Susan McDougall, Renae Michielsen, Tammy Cole and Jen Berkman an enjoyable day on the golf course.

Thanks once again to all the players and caddies representing Brisbane with good spirits and sportsmanship
