Bunker Improvements Works to Commence on Holes 14, 15 and 16
The Board of The Brisbane Golf Club is pleased to advise that bunker works on Holes 14, 15 and 16 will be completed while these holes remain out of play. The works will be carried out by Atlas, the contractor that recently delivered the Club’s green resurfacing program.
These works will effectively deliver new bunkers on these holes. The scope includes the complete removal of existing bunker materials (full shelling out), drainage upgrades, selective reshaping, installation of a modern liner system known as Dura Crumb, and the placement of new sand. Dura Crumb is an advanced bunker liner designed to significantly enhance drainage and stability, reducing washouts, maintaining consistent sand depth and ultimately providing more reliable and playable bunker conditions year-round.
Our Course Architect, Paul Mogford, has been involved in the design process for the bunkers, ensuring the new and updated bunkers align with our course enhancement plan while maintaining the character and playability of the course.
As part of these works:
- A new fairway bunker will be added on the left-hand side of the fairway on Hole 14 at approximately 285 metres from the tee.
- The second fairway bunker on Hole 15 will be removed.
- The bunker in front of the water hazard on Hole 16 will be reduced in size.
Plans outlining these works have been placed on display in the Garden Room and can also be viewed by clicking below.
Work is expected to commence within the next week and will take approximately four weeks to complete, subject to favourable weather conditions. Importantly, these works won’t compromise the re-opening of Holes 14, 15 and 16, along with the Foundation Green, which are anticipated to return to play in late May or early June 2026.
As with our recent green resurfacing program, these three holes will also serve as a valuable trial for future bunker renovation processes, timing and overall execution. This will assist in refining our approach as we look to prioritise bunker improvements across the course in the coming years as part of our five year capital expenditure plan.
In recent years, we have reduced the overall size of our bunkers by approximately 10%. While we will continue to remove or downsize bunkers where appropriate, we recognise that bunkers play an important role in golf course design. They provide strategic challenge, reward accuracy and contribute to the visual appeal and definition of each hole. Our aim is to strike the right balance between playability, aesthetics and maintainability.
We believe that once our bunker network has been progressively upgraded, members will notice a significant improvement in both playing experience and consistency of presentation, while also enabling our course staff to maintain them more efficiently on a day-to-day basis.
We are pleased to be working with Atlas again and look forward to delivering another high-quality outcome for the Club.
Existing course routings will remain in place until Holes 14, 15 and 16 are reopened.
We appreciate your understanding during this period and look forward to members enjoying the improved bunkers in the near future. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me on 0411 412 666 or via geoff@brisbanegolfclub.com.au
