STC Match versus Carbrook at BGC on Tuesday 21 April 2026

Gidday Golfers

More good news this week! We continued our winning streak with a 5/2 victory at home against Carbrook on Tuesday. Once again, our magnificent singles players carried the day, sweeping all four matches.

The Conditions: A perfect Autumn noon start. The course is in peak condition; the greens are performing beautifully, and the fairways are running fast thanks to the recent dry spell.

The Singles (The Clean Sweep)

  • Peter Hargreaves (Def. Sean Morris, 3/2): A solid start. Both traded birdies (Sean on the 8th, Peter on the 9th) before Peter turned 3rd up. Determined not to “do a Carlton” and blow the lead, Peter closed it out with a great birdie on the tricky 20th.
  • Bob Ogilvy (Def. Paul Kowtan, 6/5): Bob had a “day out” against the Carbrook Captain. Square with the card and a massive bounce-back from last week. Well played, Bob.
  • Ian Burgess (Def. Darren Hargraves, 1-up): A tight, seesawing affair. Hargraves is similar in stature to our Peter H (with an E) but fortunately he was not as good a putter, it would seem. “Burg’s” putter was stone cold until it mattered most—holing a 12-footer on the 18th to clinch the win.
  • Phil Somerfield (Def. Ian Travers, 1-up): Neck-and-neck all afternoon. Phil showed great composure to sneak ahead on the final hole.

The 4BBB (The Battle Zone)

  • Clint Auty & Peter Martin (Lost 3/2 to Darren Routledge and Padge Singh): This match was ‘off-the-stick’. Carbrook started fast. Errors on 8, 9, and 10 gave them the momentum. Despite a solid regroup, Clint and Marto couldn’t peg back a very consistent opposition.
  • Peter Lansom & Richard Garnham (Halved with Philip Thompson, 2 shots handicap and Julian Morrow, 4 shots handicap): Giving up shots to the opposition made this a grind. Trailing “dormie” with two to play, the boys showed incredible grit to win the last two holes and salvage a half.
  • Craig Mills & Rob Brown (Halved with Rob Scherian and Dave Millar – both two shots handicap): A dramatic match featuring some “concession confusion” on the 3rd and a birdie-blitz on the 21st. Despite being 1-down on the 18th tee, a scrappy finish from both sides resulted in a well-earned half.
